The person behind the methodology.
There are consultants who study dental practices. And then there is Tammy Duncan.
Tammy's career in dentistry began in 1988 — not in a boardroom, but in a dental chair. As a dental assistant, she learned firsthand what it felt like to be part of a team that either worked together beautifully or didn't work at all. She watched patients arrive anxious and leave relieved, arrive hopeful and leave disappointed — and somewhere in the middle of all of it, she began to notice something. It wasn't always the clinical care that made the difference. It was everything around it: the way a schedule was built, the way a phone call was handled, the way a patient was welcomed or rushed or forgotten. That quiet observation followed her through every role she took on over the next 38 years — from the front desk to practice management, from small private practices to busy multi-provider offices. The problems looked different. The patterns were always the same.
From the operatory Tammy moved into office management — where she discovered that the communication challenges she had observed chairside were even more consequential at the front desk. The phone calls that welcomed patients or quietly turned them away. The financial conversations that built trust or created walls. The confirmation calls that filled the schedule or planted the seed of cancellation.
She became a dental software trainer — traveling across the country, working inside many dental practices, watching the same patterns repeat themselves in every market, every size practice, every demographic. The teams were different. The challenges were remarkably consistent.
And in every practice she asked the same question.
"Why is nobody teaching the words?"
